Unforgiveness | Matthew 6:12-15

Matthew 6:12-15 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

We were supposed to be getting the baseball field ready for an afternoon game. But as we looked out over the centerfield fence, the high jump station caught our attention. We dropped our rakes, parked the base lining apparatus, and headed for the track. We set the bar at a height just above the mat on the other side and had at it. The forward roll, the side-slide, and the Fosberry Flop were mastered on the first try. Then we moved the bar to a minimal qualifying height. Things changed. The forward roll sent the bar clanging to the ground. The side-slide collided with the bar in mid-air. The Fosberry Flop…flopped. The minimal qualifying height stood as a barrier between us and any measure of success.

The barrier that stands between us and spiritual success is a bar called unforgiveness. Whatever “technique” we use to clear it—early morning devotionals, huddle groups, a Beth Moore series, Scripture memorization—all send the bar clanging to the ground without a heart willing to forgive. Check out the passage—“If you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” God’s “minimal qualifying height” for spiritual growth is forgiveness.

If you are living with a heart unwilling to forgive, try as you might, you cannot clear the bar. On the other hand, “if you forgive men when they sin against you,” get ready to take off and fly!

Father, forgiveness is a great thought until I have to actually do it. Give me the freedom to forgive others so that I can be forgiven by you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
