Take Courage! | Joshua 1:9

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Ever feel like you are standing alone? That you’re an island in a sea of people? Have you ever physically felt the weight of responsibility on your shoulders? You realize that if you blow it, the things around you blow up. Joshua has some words for you, “Welcome to my life.” Moses, the great leader, was dead. The leadership responsibility had been passed on to him at a pivotal point in Israel’s history. Quite frankly, it was feeling more like an anchor than a privilege.

“Get ready,” God told Joshua, “to cross the Jordan River into the [Promised Land].” Evidently, Joshua was feeling a bit hesitant. So God reminded him, “Be strong and courageous” (1:6); and again, “Be strong and very courageous” (1:7); and once more, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous” (1:9). Joshua, you are shaking in your sandals—“Do not be terrified.” Joshua, your heart is wavering—“Do not be discouraged.” Joshua, you know that whatever you come up against, whatever the obstacle, whatever the challenge…I am with you wherever you go.

Are there some challenges ahead of you today? Is the responsibility a bit overwhelming? Is your stomach tied up in knots as you think about the next meeting? Are you getting behind from tending to the fevers and coughs and sore throats? Feeling the weight? Hang in there! Take courage! God is right there with you! And He will remain with you wherever you go! Take that promise and run with it! All the way to the Promised Land!

Dear Father, I am weak, but you are strong. Today I ask this one thing: Give the strength and courage I need for the assignments you have for me. And when the day is over I will not forget to thank you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
