The Journey with Ron Moore

The Holy Standard | Acts 17:11

Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

We live in a world where virtually anything attractively packaged and effectively marketed can be put forth as a must-have product. Watch those infomercials long enough and you catch yourself thinking…I have to get me one of those. One minute I never knew the thing existed; the next minute I don’t think I can live without it. You can’t buy it at the store; they’re going fast; it’s a limited offer, for goodness sakes; and if I call now I can get a bunch of other stuff valued at over $200 thrown in for free. Come on, Lori, it’s only three easy payments of $19.99! She always says, “No!”

We live in a world where virtually any teaching that’s attractively packaged and effectively presented can be swallowed as true. Just attach enough bits of truth to the lure of lies and many—yes, even many Christians—will take the bait. We need to be like the Bereans. They were eager to hear the message but they also took the time to search the Scriptures. They measured Paul’s words against the holy standard.

When you read or hear something that just doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t. But to make a final determination, you must use one source at the measuring rod—God’s holy Word. God inerrant Word is that one standard by which we measure all teaching. Spend time searching the Scriptures, and you’ll be able to spot a counterfeit a mile away.

Lord, may we be people of The Book. In a world of attractive packages and smooth presentations, may we, like the Bereans, diligently search the Scriptures to distinguish truth from error. In Christ’s Name. Amen.
