The Journey with Ron Moore

More Than Words | Matthew 6:7-8 | Devotional

Matthew 6:7-8 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Okay, so I put a new dictionary app on my iPhone and I get a word of the day. I try to drop them in conversation each day, so if you hear a new word, please act impressed. I share them with my daughter and a friend of hers on the way to school each morning and…well, they are not impressed at all. Anyway, one of the words, this past week was…you ready for this…”logorrhea.” It means “repetitious speech, incessant or compulsive talkativeness, wearisome volubility.”

The pagans had a case of prayer logorrhea. They just kept babbling on. They were convinced that their gods measured prayer by the number of words. Once they reached a certain quota the ears of the gods were opened. Jesus said, don’t act like the pagans when you prayer.

Prayer is more than words. Communicate openly and honestly with the Father. Drop the religious phrases and worn out formulas. In normal language, simply tell God what’s on your heart. Then you’ll never run out of things to say.

Father, some of us need to re-learn how to talk to you. Some of our old prayer habits are hard to break. Help us simply tell you what’s on our heart—our dreams and disappointment, our failure and fears, our desire to sin, and our lack of desire to spend time with you. Lord, help us to open our heart to you and let honest, meaningful words pour out. For Christ’s sake. Amen.
