The Journey with Ron Moore

I Am His Forever | Romans 8:38-39

Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I grew up believing that I could lose my relationship with God. I thought you could be a Christian in the morning, sin at lunch, and be headed for hell in the afternoon. All sins were disqualifiers, but there were some “big ones” that carried a more serious threat, like dancing, drinking, swearing, and smoking. Later, I came to understand that smoking will not send you to hell; but it will make you smell like you’ve already been there. (Like that one? Here’s another—no one really smokes, it’s the cigarette that does the smoking; they’re the suckers.) Movies were also on the list of things that ended one’s salvation. Anytime I wanted to see a movie with my friends, the standard line was: what if Jesus comes back while you are in the theatre! No one could possibly be raptured from the Perry Theatre. Actually, that argument made some sense, because the floor of the theatre was very sticky. It would have been possible to get “stuck” in there even during the Rapture! So that’s how I grew up. Sometimes certain of heaven; other times, following an act of sin, believing I was headed to hell.

Then one day, studying Scripture, I learned that nothing can separate me from the love of God found in Christ alone. It was like a burden had been lifted from my shoulders. That day, in a hot parking lot in Dallas, Texas, I learned that I was a child of God and would forever be.

Salvation, from beginning to end, is of the Lord. When I trust in Christ—when Jesus calls me to Himself—I am His forever! Once I am truly saved, I will always be saved! Because Jesus paid all my debt on the cross, I am eternally secure! I can live with assurance of my salvation! Nothing can snatch me out of His hand. I will pass from death to life. Does that give me a license to sin? Absolutely not! This truth gives me freedom to respond to God’s amazing grace in loving obedience. Is that the life you’re living?

Father, thank You for Your amazing love. Thank You that nothing can separate me from You. Thank You for the confident security that is found in Jesus. Help me to respond by following hard after You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
