Road Rules | Proverbs 19:10 | Devotional

Proverbs 19:10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury-- how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

Our proverb today pictures a mismatch. The “fool” is unable to appropriately appreciate a lavish lifestyle. The person who has only known slavery lacks the experience to take over the job of a ruler. Now remember a proverb is “A statement that reveals the actual nature of a profound truth by comparing it with common, picturesque, tangible images of life.” So, what’s the profound truth?

It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury… Neither is it fitting for the believer to live his entire life and never understand and appreciate the great riches of God. We are children of the eternal God, saved by grace, empowered by the Holy Spirit who raised Christ from the dead. To not access what we have is foolish.

--how much worse for a slave to rule over princes! Many people want to serve God…but only as advisors. As long as they can drive, they are more than happy to let God ride shotgun. Our desire to call the shots is akin to a slave ruling over princes.

Our security is founded in our expectation that God is in control and will accomplish His purposes according to His character. He has great things for us to be and do…if…we will live in His power and under His authority.

Father, may we be wise enough to appreciate and appropriate your rich blessings. May we be humble enough to submit to your leading. In Jesus name. Amen.
