The Greatest Text Message | John 5:35-47 | Devotional

John 5:35-47
John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. "I do not accept praise from men, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God? "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"

Not long ago, I was speaking to a pastor who was preparing to plant a church in a Dallas suburb. I knew the area already had a great church and asked why he chose that spot to start a new work. He said, “Oh, that church you’re talking about - they are way more ‘Bible-y’ than we are. If a person goes to that church, they are not going to want to come to ours.”

I thank God for the privilege of serving at The Bible Chapel, and am proud that for the 40 plus years of our history, we have been very “Bible-y.” We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and is the final authority for life and living. We preach and teach from the Bible, but we thought it was time to take a look at the Bible. Our desire is to give each seeker and believer the assurance that God’s Word is inerrant and can be completely trusted for life and eternity. We are certain that when we ask questions about the Bible, the answers give us more confidence in the Bible.

But I want to make one thing clear as we start this series. Read John 5:39-40 again. Let’s make sure we understand that the study of Scripture is not an end in itself. We do not study God’s Word (even “diligently”) just to impress others with our knowledge. Our desire is not to produce puffy heads that stand in pride, but tender hearts that kneel humbly in worship before the living God. There is much more at stake in life and eternity than winning Bible trivia games. The Bible known is a start; the Bible applied is the end game.
