"What Are Your Resolutions This Year?"
Daniel 1

New Years is kind of a cool holiday, I've always thought. Its basically two free days off of work, school, and the business of life. For most of us, the celebration means going to a few parties and banging some pots and pans around at midnight.

The New Year is also the time that we start thinking about what we did in the last year and how we can improve in the New Year.

Usually we start off the year with all kinds of promises to do better. Eat less, be nicer to our siblings, and maybe even take school a little more seriously. But as with most of life's commitments, we start to waffle on our resolutions by the beginning of February.

Are resolutions important? I think sometimes they can be overdone. I think its better to not make promises than to make promises we know we can't keep.

However, I think this is a great time for young people to renew their commitment. Let me tell you about a teenager that made a vow—a resolution he determined to keep not just for one year, but for the rest of his life.

His name is Daniel. Ripped from his homeland as a teenager, he was carried to a strange new country, where he faced tremendous pressure to let go of all of the values he believed. Almost everyone other teenager who was captured with Daniel caved and adopted the religion and lifestyle of their new country. But not Daniel.

The Bible says that he purposed in his heart—he determined—that he would not sacrifice what he believed. Even if it cost him something.

What about you? If there is any resolution worth making this New Year, it's the resolution to follow Christ with your life. Like Daniel you live in a culture that pressures you to abandon your faith, to chuck all of your values and the things you've been taught.

Make a commitment now to do what is right, no matter the cost.

This is a resolution not just worth making, but worth keeping.
