Isaiah 8:19

“And when they say to you, ‘Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,’ should not a people inquire of their God?  Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?”

God wants you to depend on him alone in your spiritual life!

There are many ‘spiritual’ alternatives readily available today. Tarot cards, palm reading, séances, auras, crystal energies, witchcraft, white magic, mediums, mystics—all these and more invite you to take part in their approach to life and power and the future. However, alternative spiritual pursuits are not an option for you as a Christian.

Notice that Isaiah does not say that there are no spiritual forces or reality involved in these pursuits. Some of them may be tied into demonic or other spiritual forces and offer real results. But that is not what makes something right.

“Should not a people inquire of their God?”Today God is saying to us, “I want you to come to me when you have concerns about issues in your life!” Pursuing those other things will only lead to “distress and darkness” (v. 22) in your life.

If you will begin consulting God about the issues of your life and bringing them to him in prayer, you will find that he is responsive to your prayers. He is ready to act for you! And remember when you pray about something, to trust in God’s response, which may be different than you had hoped.

How could you use today’s Scripture verse to help someone looking for answers in New Age and other ‘spiritual’ alternatives? Write your thoughts here:
