The Power of Just One

Exodus 32:9-14 (NIV®)

“I have seen these people,” the LORD said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.” But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God . . . then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

The Israelites were in the wilderness, and Moses was on Mount Sinai with God. He’d been gone so long that the people thought something had happened to him and he wasn’t coming back. It didn’t take long for them to begin to engage in all sorts of immorality and ungodly things. They even made a golden calf and worshipped it. God was very angry and said, “I’m going to destroy them all, Moses. I’ll just start over with you.” Moses replied, “Don’t do it, Lord, because the Egyptians will hear and they’ll say You couldn’t finish what You started.” And God relented. When we find ourselves in the midst of a generation that’s made ungodly choices, you choosing to follow God can make all the difference. You say, “I don’t see how. I’m just one person, and I don’t have much influence.” Don’t discount the power of God in you. He is searching for people who will follow Him.

PRAYER

Father God, I want to be known as someone who will follow You no matter where You lead—to the mountaintop or through the wilderness. Help me to be faithful to You in all of life’s circumstances, even when I don’t understand Your plan. Give me the faith of Moses, Lord, so that I will have the persistence to plead with You and not give up on myself or others. In the name of Jesus, amen.
