Today’s Text and Thought of Encouragement:
“But those who wait for the Lord, who hope in Him shall renew their strength, they shall lift their wings and mount up close to God as eagles mount up to the sun; they shall walk and not faint or become tired.”
Isaiah 40: 31
“Those who wait upon the Lord shall obtain wings! They become endowed with power to rise above things. Wings are required for breath of view. The wing-life is characterized by a sense of proportion. To see things aright we must get away from them…As eagles…what a strength of wing! Such is to be ours if we wait upon the Lord. We shall be able to soar above disappointment – no matter how great – and to wing our way into the very presence of God. Let us live the wing-life!”
Mrs. Charles E. Cowman
“Wide soaring gives wide seeing!”
Today’s Study Text:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”
New International Version
“Living A Fulfilled Life” Part 1
“God brings fulfillment into my life through the beauty of His creative power.”
“Fulfillment” – To contain everything that is essential. To bring to wholeness. To bring to completion.
How does God bring His “fulfillment” into my life?
“The glory of the Lord shall endure forever: the Lord shall rejoice in His works.”
King James Version
“The world is the first Bible that God made for the instruction of man.”
Clement of Alexandria
My grandmother had a set of records – one of those five-album boxed sets from Longines Symphonette. (If you remember these then we may not want to tell the whole world our age.) This particular group of albums was called “Melodies of Love & Romance.” The Choraliers, a male chorus who happen to sing several of the songs, had a harmonious rendition of the song, “The Best Things In Life Are Free.” Written by a trio of songwriters, the words go like this:
“The moon belongs to everyone,
the best things in life are free.
The stars belong to everyone,
they gleam there for you and me.
The flowers in spring –
the robins that sing;
The sunbeams that shine,
they’re yours, they’re mine;
And love belongs to everyone,
the best things in life are free.”
B. G. DeSylva, Lew Brown, Ray Henderson
Written in 1927
At first you might, as I did at one time, pass this song off as a little “ditty!” But after listening closely to the words, I remember going outside at my grandparents’ ranch one night on an evening when the moon was full. As I watched that big ball rise from behind the rocky cliffs and illuminate the dark night sky, I was thankful the beauty I witnessed was a free gift bestowed upon me by my Heavenly Maker. I felt a sense of awe. Yes, at that moment, I felt fulfilled.
Several years ago, my husband and I stayed overnight in a canyon where there were no ground lights. In the middle of the night my husband stepped outside and this is what he shared with me the next morning:
“The sky was black. I’d never seen it so dark. And stars I’d seen many times before seemed to disappear in clusters. It was as if every star had multiplied hundreds of times over. The sky was so dark and the stars so bright, I’d never seen anything like it.”
In the Psalms, David, who spent much of his time outside, records these words, “He telleth the number of the stars; He calleth them by their names” (Psalm 147:4,5 King James Version). Then David continues by saying, “Great is our Lord, and of great power.”
When I look into the night sky, or feel the warm heat of the sun on my body; when I hear my bird friends chirping as the sun comes up or watch the iridescent colors on a hummingbird’s wings sparkle as they help the small bird hover over a feeder, I am reminded how God’s handiwork and His love of beauty make my life fulfilled – it completes my life.
If you feel insignificant and without purpose or lacking in direction and unfulfilled in this new year, then I ask you to go no further than your back door tonight. Look into the sky – see the moon and stars – it won’t cost you one red cent. Or look at the rays from the sun shining on a pond or listen to a bird’s song. It’s free!
What’s more – it’s God’s reminder to you and me that we also have a purpose in His big creation. And in the coming months, it is my prayer that in 2016 God will grant each of you the total and complete fulfillment of His special purpose as it unfolds in your life and mine.
“May the morning sun
shine in your heart.
May the blue-white sky be in
all your days.
May the moon and the stars
shine on all your nights.
God’s gifts are yours
“How Did You Think of a Star?”
“God, when you thought of a pine tree,
How did you think of a star?
God, when you patterned a bird song,
Flung on silver string,
How did you know the ecstasy
That crystal call would bring?
How did you think of a bubbling throat
And a beautifully speckled wing?
God, when you fashioned a raindrop,
How did you think of a stem
Bearing a lovely satin leaf
To hold the tiny gem?
How did you know a million drops
Would deck the morning’s hem?
Why did you mate the moonlit night
With the honeysuckle vines?
How did you know Madeira bloom
Distilled ecstatic wines?
How did you weave the velvet dusk
Where tangled perfumes are?
God, when you thought of a pine tree,
How did you think of a star?”
