“The Lord reigneth, He is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith He hath girded Himself; the world also is established, that it cannot be moved. Thy throne is established of old: Thou art from everlasting…the Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea. Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh Thine house, O Lord, forever.”
Psalm 93: 1-5
Have I opened my heart to the majesty, rulership, and holiness of my Father who reigns in Heaven?
“The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice.”
Psalm 97: 1
“When God and His glory are made our end, we shall find a silent likeness pass in upon us; the beauty of God will, by degrees, enter upon our soul.”
The last few days we have studied the part of the Lord’s Prayer that some call the “Godward” position. We have become better acquainted with God’s name, God’s kingdom and last, with God’s Will.
As I began to get a much better understanding of the thoughts Jesus conveyed to His disciples about the relationship His Father, God, has and wants to have with His children on earth, my appreciation for the majesty, sovereignty and glory of God have increased dramatically. I hope the same has happened to you too. For as we appreciate the greatness of our Father, we begin to have increased faith and trust in His capability to handle every aspect of our daily lives.
If you read carefully Psalm 93, you will find that David was confronted with the same sense of overwhelming awe as he began to understand the supreme greatness of God. It is extremely revealing to note the way David uses some of the same words Jesus taught us when addressing God in the Lord’s Prayer. It appears David understood God’s will, His glory, His rulership and reign. His strength, as well as the unlimited ability of God to take perfect care of everything in His kingdom.
As we spend time reflecting on the greatness of our Heavenly Father, I want to share with you a beautiful meditation written by Walter Russell Bowie which serves to illuminate with an even brighter fire, the depth and width of the glory of God contained in the Lord’s Prayer.
A Meditation on The Lord’s Prayer
“Our Father, who art in heaven.
Help me to believe this day that there is a power to lift me up which is stronger than all the things that hold me down.
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Help me to be sensitive to what is beautiful, and responsive to what is good, so that day by day I may grow more sure of the holiness of life in which I want to trust.
Thy Kingdom Come.
Help me to be quick to see, and ready to encourage, whatever brings the better meaning of God into that which otherwise might be the common round of the uninspired day.
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Help me to believe that the ideals of the spirit are not a far-off dream, but a power to command loyalty and direct my life here on our real earth.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Open the way for me to earn an honest living without anxiety; but let me never forget the needs of others, and make me want only that benefit for myself which will also be their gain.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Make me patient and sympathetic with the shortcomings of others, especially of those I love; and keep me sternly watchful only of my own. Let me never grow hard with the unconscious cruelty of those who measure themselves by mean standards, and so think they have excelled. Keep my eyes lifted to the highest, so that I may be forgiving, because I know how much there is of which I need to be forgiven.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
“There is but one God, the Maker, Preserver and Ruler of all things, having in, and of Himself, all perfections, and being infinite in them all; and to Him all creatures owe the highest love, reverence and obedience.”
