Home Is Where You Hang Your Heart - Warrior Mom Wisdom - Week of August 9

Warrior Mom Wisdom Devotional

HOME IS WHERE YOU HANG YOUR HEART

I recently found something that my husband’s aunt made for us as a wedding gift. It’s a handcrafted picture that says, “Home is where you hang your heart.” I found it in a box when I was unpacking. I recognized that it was slightly outdated as it was made 21 years ago. The colors were mauve and light blue. Who remembers how popular those colors were in the early 90s?  I wondered what I would do with it. The glass in the frame was broken, but I decided to keep it and reframe it over an upcoming weekend.

For a moment, I thought over the past 21 years. We served in the military, had two children, and lived in four houses and two states. We had endured difficult times, specifically, my sons diagnose of deafness and blindness. But one of the hardest times was when we lost our home in 2007. I thought over the last several years and how difficult they were due to losing all things material. I thought how amazing it is that God birthed The Warrior Moms ministry in the heat of it all. Therefore, only God gets the credit.

While it was very hard, God forged within me the concept that He is the only thing that matters and that even when we “lose it all” by the world’s standards, when He is at home within us, we are always “home” and we have everything we really need.

This little sign seemed to have so much more meaning to me now, 21 years later after having first received it. Now, it was broken and outdated, but the value of its message was priceless. When God is at home within us… when we allow Him to have His way within these hearts, minds, and spirits, He may decide to rearrange the furniture and get rid of some clutter, but we can trust Him to care for us. Though I often felt and continue to feel much like the broken and outdated frame within my hand, I have learned and I share with you the following: When we allow Him to make His home within us, we will always be “at home” no-matter the circumstance.

Delight yourself in Him and He will give you the desires of your heart. Be encouraged. God loves you!
