The Chosen City
“Now Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put His name there.…” (1 Kings 14:21,)
If you could decide on any city in the world in which to live, where would you choose? Would you prefer “Green Acres” or “Park Avenue”? Do you want a tropical paradise or a mountain hideaway? Do you like small-town pleasures or cosmopolitan excitement?
When God chose a city upon which to put His name, He chose Jerusalem. This was an unheard of city until the Lord laid it upon the heart of King David to make it the capital city of Israel. David built it as a city, Solomon built it as a place of splendor, but God built is as His chosen dwelling place on earth.
Still today there is no more fought after city in the entire world. In fact, no other city even comes close to eliciting the passions of the peoples of the world than does Jerusalem. Why? Because it is God’s city, and this world is at enmity with God.
When you hear voices from all sides who desire to divide Jerusalem in one manner or another, just remember that they are suggesting the division of “the city which he Lord had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put His name there.” Those with a firm understanding of God’s Word will always side with those who place Jerusalem firmly in the control of the Jews of Israel.
