A Fundamental Ministry
Dr. Randy White

"Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of what are no gods." (2 Chronicles 13:9, NASB95)

In the days of the divided Kingdom, King Abijah of Judah went to war against the northern Kingdom under its King Jeroboam.  The northern Kingdom had seceded from the nation of Israel, leaving the protection and promises of God.  In doing so, they drove out the northern Levitical priests, who fled south in order to be faithful to God.  In his confrontation, Abijah commented to Jeroboam that now, in the north, “whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of what are no gods.”

The book of Exodus was very specific about who could be priests of God, and how they were to become priests.  The New Testament also gives strong qualifications for the “overseer” position of Pastor (Christ now being our only Priest).

In many ways the modern world is not unlike the world of Jeroboam.  Rather than go by God’s standards, it seems that anyone today can come forth and declare themselves God’s chosen pastor, priest, apostle, bishop, or spiritual guru.  The Biblical standard is that God calls His chosen servants, and He does so through the church.  Only with the “laying on of hands” has the church affirmed the call of God on a man’s life to the Gospel ministry.  This ordination is not to be done lightly, because the church is placing itself under the authority of these men.  While they are held to a higher standard, they are also given a higher degree of authority under the ultimate authority of Christ.

Be careful of whom you allow into the ministry or under whom you place yourself in spiritual authority.  Make sure they are God called and church approved.  Then, follow them with great spiritual devotion.
