Well once again it's time to gather our family, set our tables with turkey and all the trimmings, and stuff ourselves silly! After we've done that, we'll move into the living room and gather around the TV to watch grown men compete to see which team can carry a leather ball across the goal line the most times. The holiday that began as a way to give thanks to God for His provision and protection has little resemblance to our forefathers' way of celebrating this holiday.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'll do my share of eating pumpkin pie and turkey. I may even watch a football game or two. But what I also want to do is to encourage all of us to spend time thanking God for His goodness and His love towards us. In the course of our hectic lives we sometimes forget to say thank you to God and to our family and friends.
So this year, when we gather around the table with our family and friends, let's take this opportunity to let them know how much we love and appreciate them, because they are a special blessing from God to us.
If I were to make a list of all God's blessings, it would probably take days to put together because there are many things for which I am thankful. I am thankful for my husband and my daughter, Rachel. They are so supportive of me and I appreciate the sacrifice that they have made for me. I have also been blessed with three wonderful sons and 5 beautiful grandchildren. I appreciate the United Methodist Church for allowing me the privilege of using my gifts and talents to serve as an Evangelist. I am thankful for churches that invite us to come, for every person that prays for us, and for every gift that we receive to support the work that we do. I am thankful for the country that I live in and for the freedom that we have to worship and celebrate God's goodness. I am thankful for my family and my friends who are always there for me. And I am thankful for God's son, Jesus, who shed His blood on the cross so that I could be delivered from evil and have abundant life here and eternal life with God.
God is so worthy of our praise. Apart from Him, we can do nothing that is of any lasting value. I pray that this week as we celebrate Thanksgiving, we will turn our attention to God and thank Him for all that He has blessed us with. Make a list of all that God has blessed you with and start giving Him thanks, out loud, for His provision and protection in your life. Be thankful and say so!
