jrstout68 - Yes, the Bible DOES tell us to stop tithing. It is in Hebrews 7. Read AND STUDY the first 20 verses in the Book of Hebrews. Key verses are 5, 12, and 18.

In Hebrews 7:5 we are told that Levi (the Levites) took the tithes under the law.

In Hebrews 7:12 we are told that when the priesthood changes, the law will change.

In Hebrews 7:18 we are told that the law was disannulled.

In the first nine verses of Hebrews 7 the words tenth or tithes appears SEVEN TIMES. The ONLY place in the Bible, after Calvary, that tithing appears is in Hebrews 7.

Hebrews 7:18 is telling us that Numbers 18 was disannulled. Numbers 18 established the Levitical priesthood, and part of that establishing included tithing. When the Levitical priesthood ended (at Calvary, or at least in the year 70AD when the temple was destroyed), all laws that established that priesthood were canceled. We are now under a BETTER Testament. Giving from the heart is better than a required tithe.

Excellent article and keep up the good work! People get touchy about their money or the money that God has graciously given them! God instituted tithing in the law because He knew the people wouldn't give. But you'll notice that the things contained in the law were restated by Jesus to a greater degree: murder, adultery, circumcision....

Let me make two points: Does the New Testament tell us not to tithe? And, the teaching on giving/tithing I always hear taught is concerning Paul taking up money for the famine stricken church in Jerusalem. This has nothing to do with tithing. That was a freewill offering. My personal opinion is that we give the 23 1/3% and not the 10%!

Just remember it is more blessed to give than receive. I'm storing up treasures in heaven. And if that means giving 99.99% of the income God has given me that is what I'll do. We can all get by on a lot less!

It is interesting to me that the neither Apostles Paul or Peter state specific percentages for believers to give. Did they forget to mention this in there teachings? I wish they had - or should they? Tithes is practically missing from their teaching - but giving is not. Not only is giving mentioned, but we are told to give generously and cheerfully. I think the idea is to let the Holy Spirit teach you how and what to give. If the Holy Spirit is doing the teaching, then the giving will be much and with joy and God will be pleased. Something else to keep in mind about the reason many don't give in the church is because of how the money is being spent. How much money is going into buildings and non-ministry projects, versus what is actually going towards true ministry work? The bottom line is many people don't trust the preachers and the deacons. I don't think tithes per se is NT, but grace giving is.

Timotheus61 - You are mistaken on several points. First of all, you are trying to mix offerings with tithing. The word tithe means one tenth. Abel did not offer one tenth; therefore, his offering has absolutely nothing to do with tithing.

Abraham's tithe has nothing to do with the law of tithing. Abraham gave a free-will gift of ten percent of war spoils, NOT one tenth of his income or his wealth.

Offerings should our thanks to God, NOT tithing. The law of tithing had nothing to do with showing thanks to God. It was law. It was required. The heart was not involved anymore than when you pay your income taxes.

Offerings come from the heart. Offerings come from love.

You cannot mix offerings with God's tithe. They have nothing to do with each other.

What you wrote has no biblical support.

Tithing began after Offering of Abel. Abraham was the first one mentioned to tithe. This was then included in the Law.The aim was to make man learn to say thanks to the giver-God. Also the Levi were to depend on Tithe & were to feed the 11 tribes with Spiritual food. So now in New Testament we our selves are the Temple of God. We need to do it much more with Trinity residing in & with us. We need to learn to grow as Children of God as givers ! God is the first Giver. He gives even to the pagans. So if we tithe only to gain riches, then we are infact doomed with mean mentallity. Instead we need to learn to give whole hearted as we have the previlege of giving & not begging. Our Father has met our needs we portray that when we give with a desire to look how best & how much we can give.Give sparingly as our Father does it. The pastors at a loss of teaching facts of His Kingdom & inculcate giving as part of life, they start to enforce or give incentives.

John MacArthur – Senior Pastor of a mega church in Los Angeles, has his nationwide radio broadcast, has a seminary – teaches that tithing ended at the cross.

J. Vernon McGee – teaches that tithing ended at the cross.

Chuck Swindoll teaches tithing ended at the cross.

T.D. Jakes teaches the command to tithe ended at the cross.

A REPORT RECENTLY RELEASED THROUGH THE SOUTHEASTERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, WRITTEN BY ANDREAS J. KÖSTENBERGER AND DAVID A. CROTEAU TEACHES THAT TITHING ENDED AT THE CROSS.

It's time Christian's start studying the Word of God for themselves and NOT believe everything taught by their pastor.

Furnituremaker - The sad thing is that those who tithe have missed the whole concept of God's tithe. Yes, if they are going to follow the tithing commands, they should be following ALL of them, not just pick out the parts they want to follow.

The truth is, they follow NO part of the tithing commands since the command to tithe was NEVER or income or anything that man made or earned.

The Bible says there will be false teachers. The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil.

People who think they are following God's command to tithe are only fooling themselves. They are following what man came up with around 1870.

The Bible warns against following tradition instead of the Word.

Thanks, Furnituremaker, for your support.

That below is Deuteronomy 14...about tithing..try turning your tithe into strong drink and consuming it at church before the Lord with your family...but it is the tithe as prescribed.....why do we do part and not all if it is for us now?

Tithingtoday you are not alone..keep saying the truth

22Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
23And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
24And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
25Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:
26And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

enriquesigui - God commanded tithing in the following scriptures:

Leviticus 27:30-34 - tithing of the land and animals
Deuteronomy 14:22-27 - tithing of the land only, and the first-born animals
Deuteronomy 14:28-29 - tithing of the land

Which of the above commands do you, yourself, claim to follow?

If we are NOT to change God's Word, please show me scripture where tithing is commanded on anything that man made or earned.

You, like others, have misinterpreted what the tithe really was (or is). God commanded tithing on ONLY miraculous increases that came from God, and NEVER on anything that man made or earned.

Church leaders have taken the idea of tithing from Leviticus 27:30-34 above and changed the rules to fit their own needs. This is proven if you would take the time to do a little research.

Once man changes the Word, it is no longer God's word.

Why is it that NO ONE is quoting scripture to show tithing on income was ever commanded. Why? Because it isn't there. Period.
