Tithing came not just from the law and it actually preceded the law. Abraham gave 10% of what he had to Melchizedek (Genesis 14:20). And Jacob too vowed to the Lord to give 10% of all he had to God (Genesis 28:22). All this occurred well before the law came into place.

The principle to adopt when it comes to tithing is to acknowledge that everything we have is God's and we must be willing to give anything we have without a grudge to the Lord.

We must put God first and He will provide shelter for those who trust Him under the shadow of His wings.

Objection:
The N.T. does not teach tithing. The only reference to tithing is from the Lord and seems to say that if you are going to keep the law, keep all of it. Tithing is under the law and is similar to circumcision which Paul reprimanded the Galatians for falling into. When the early church leaders and apostles decided what practices to place upon the gentile believers Tithing was not one of them. Paul in is financial difficulties (of which he mentions many times) did not revert to impossing the tithing law, a lesson which many in the ministry should learn today. N.T. teaching is that we are to give as the Lord directs us personally as we owe the Lord Jesus Christ not 10% but 100% as ew are not our own but have been bought with a price, the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed to us all. The practicing of hammering the tithing law says as much about the hammerer as the one being hammered.

My response to those who argue that "New Testament" believers don't have to tithe is, "Fine, so that means you're free to give more than 10%, right?"

I believe tithing is as applicable if not more so for the New Testament believer, and the anti-tithing surge is one of many detrimental consequences to the church of dispensational theology, leading to a false impression of discontinuity between God's covenant with Israel and with the church.

If you believe you MUST tithe, do it, its the LEAST you can do[emphasis upon the word LEAST]..but please be sure your "priests" only take off the 10% God said they could have in the OT.And don't be uninformed as to how the "priests" spend the other 90%

If they're NOT doing as God commands with the rest of the "tithes", then you're throwing away the "talents" God's given you, and in effect, stealing God's money from Him. [or at least allowing your "priests" to]

That's not my opinion. That's biblical

My suggestion tho, is rather to give God BACK 100% of whatever blessings He has chosen to give you--including, but not exclusively, money.

That list's too long to put into a blog, and each of us is singularly blessed with such a unique variety of gifts, and blessings, talents, whatever, that we each have ENOUGH trouble figuring out what they are, and what God has for US individually to do.

We have the HS as our "teacher" and are a priestly nation under God, and need no other teache

“Just like God tells us to keep sex within marriage, to love one another and to seek first His kingdom...”

Also, the tithe should not be compared to a moral law that God gave His Church. When Christ preached his Sermon on the Mount, he was specifically referencing the moral law or the Ten Commandments and the point of his speech was to “magnify the law” so the religious people of his day could see that the law judges the “innermost parts”. He was spiritualizing a law that the Pharisees had misunderstood.

I encourage the readers (and author) to read the Roman passages as well as the Sermon on the Mount in context to get a grasp on what the writer of these verses intended.

“When we are able to give 10% or more of our income instead of keeping that money for ourselves, it shows that our heart isn’t tied to our money and that we love God more than our money.”

I think the author is confused as to why Christians don’t believe in the tithe and it shows with this statement. Just because I don’t believe in a 10% tithe does not mean that I love money more than God. This is a very unwise judgment of a believe heart. I don’t believe in tithing but I do believe in giving just as Paul did in 2 Corinthians 9:7 where he commands the believer to “give what he has decided in his heart to give”.

Thoughts on Tithing
by
John MacArthur

So when people today say, "We want to tithe now like they did in the Old Testament," they can't stop at 10%, they got 23.3% to start with. In addition to that, you paid a half shekel temple tax every year, in addition to that, if you had a field, you had to harvest the field in a circle and leave the corners open for the poor. It was a profit-sharing plan. If you dropped a bail of hay off your wagon, on the way to the barn, you had to leave that for the poor. So you start adding that up and you are looking at about 25% of their income went to fund the national entity of the government. Now when you get into the New Testament, the Jews were still doing that, because they still had a nation, even though they were an occupied nation, they were still a nation. They were occupied by the Romans, but they weren't run by the Romans. They had their own religious hierarchy, they had their own school systems, they had their own festivals, and all that stuff, and so they had to take care of that. They had their own priesthood; it all had to go on, that is why Jesus said, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's," in other words, pay the Romans what they asked, and render to God the things that are God's. So just to clarify that at the very beginning, when you are talking about a tithe, you are talking about the "taxation." Now when you translate that over into our time, it is kind of interesting to me that the base tax system in our country is about 20%, you add sales tax to that and you probably get another 5%, we are on about the same level they were then--about 25% of our income goes out for taxation, if you are in the normal tax bracket and with normal deductions, unless you are really doing well, but then they get you in different ways, because the more money you have the more things you buy, the more things you buy, the higher sales tax you pay, so maybe it comes out even harder for people who have more. Nonetheless, that'

MATTER OF THE HEART
In matthew 6: 21 Jesus was speaking to the people
of the old covenant because he had not been to the cross and
after the cross his message was with the apostles and the new covenant was taking place. The apostle paul did not teach tithing nor did any of the apostles. Prove me wrong.

Hebrews 7:4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
How can the christian church make a case for tithing?

Abraham did not tithe from his personal possessions but the spoils of war. The king of Sodom even offered Abraham the goods and Abraham said:

Genesis 14:23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

Does this sound like God wants 10% of your money? Does the law require 10% of your money? We can neutralize the opponents first move. No, in both cases. The word "tithe" is used 13 times in the Bible. Not once do you see the word "money" used. The word "tithes" is used 21 times in the Bible. The word "money" is not used once. The word "tithing" is used twice in:

From the old covenant verses the new covenant tithing
MATTHEW 23
(2)THE PHARASEES SIT IN MOSES SEAT.
23:23
[23] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
IT IS CLEAR THAT jESUS WAS TALKING ABOUT THE OLD COVENANT
BECAUSE OF VERSE 2. jESUS AND HIS DECIPLES LIVED UNDER THE OLD COVENANT. It is clear that the tithe teachers
want to twist the scripture to their liking because they did not include what Jesus meant in verse 1 and 2.THey use malachi chapter 3 verses 8-10 when the first verse is
addressed to the Israelis only and verses 8-10 was addressing the priests for stealing the tithe. Go to chapter 2 and you will get the truth.

Keep on seeking the Truth and speaking out. It is hard to oppose a long standing tradition like the tithe, but I think more people will if we continue to.

It is for those members of your church who are being told they are "stealing" from God that we speak out. We are to support our families first (1 Timothy 5:8) without guilt. It is faithfulness to God to care for your own family.

Why must we continue to support more buildings? In my tiny little town there are 5 Churches, 2 large fellowship halls and 2 church gyms, empty most of the time. Are these empty buildings God's work?

Perhaps it is time to change what we consider to be Church. The money placed at the Apostles was not for buildings, but to feed widows and those who had no family to care for them. The believers gave joyously not out of guilt or coercion. They shared all things in common. They met in their homes and ate together. The first deacons were chosen to serve tables for the needy.
Sounds like Church!!
