Sorry to add another comment. My wife and I are trying to determine what we want to do with our children, so this is a subject of great interest to us right now. I welcome any comments/critiques of my thinking as they will greatly help us.

One additional comment I have about the article is this: The article assumes that the most important thing in raising our children is protecting them. While my tendency is to want to protect my child from learning about things they ought not be exposed to, I'm not convinced that this trumps our call to fulfill the great commission. I fear for a world where all the "good Christians" abandon the public schools. This seems close to separatism and flies in the face of Biblical commands to be lights in the dark places. I believe many godly Christian parents send their kids to public school and are not guilty of carelessness in raising them.

While I agree that homeschooling may be the best route for many parents to take, I do not like the notion that parents are being disobedient and not raising their children if they choose to send them to public school.

The point was made very well that public school has many challenges, challenges that force parents to be even more intentional to ensure that they are the ones raising their children. A child can become more equipped to make decisions for themselves about right and wrong if they are exposed to these things and helped in the decision making process by their parents. Eventually, they will attend college (hopefully) and be exposed to much of what the world has to offer. I fear that many "sheltered" young ones who are forced for the first time to question what they believe in the hostile (yet convincing) university environment, will turn from their faith.

It is so awesome how our Lord works! My 13 yr dd just had an encounter with parents of a public school teen that had her very troubled. She went with them to an Opera with her voice class and I thought they were OK, but they critized her for being too close with her parents. They said she needed to cut the umbiblical cord and get out from under our wings. They talked to her about going to a month long camp for voice in the summer at a local university. She said no way was she going to be gone for such a long period from us. I was angry at first but realized these people are ignorant and had no control over our beliefs. We were called to homeschool and love having her close to us. I too was raised by wolves. It takes a lot of guts to admit living that way. Without parental supervision children fall hands to satan in an easy way. Thank you for this article.
