Q&A with McGee

Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Q: Is the United States Mentioned in Prophecy?
Selected from our Questions and Answers program

A: America is not mentioned in prophecy at all. I had a very facetious answer given to this question by someone who wrote in and said they were sure the U.S. was in prophecy because it says in Romans 5:8, "But God commendeth his love toward US in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for US." Well, that's pretty far-fetched, but it's no more far-fetched than some other Scriptures that some folk use as an interpretation of prophecy that the U.S. is mentioned. The nations that are mentioned in the Word of God are those that are contiguous to the nation of Israe

l. That is, they're in that geographical location and they've had something directly to do with Palestine in the past. Egypt, for instance, and also Russia. It may be a new nation, but the people of those northern tribes had a great deal to do with Israel. And of course the Roman Empire-Christ was born in Bethlehem because an edict of a Caesar caused Mary to go there and be enrolled, and our Lord was crucified on a Roman cross. The United States is removed and on the other side of the earth. I think it's presumption on our part to think we should be mentioned in the Word of God. But a great many people fall for that when some teacher comes along and tries to tell them where the U.S. is mentioned. May I say to you, it's that type of interpretation that brings prophecy into disrepute.
