All the Dad says is "No way is God going to send that little girl to Hell." He's not talking about "good people" in general- he's talking about one character in particular.
And why does the subject even come up? Because it's in the book!

Is Walden Media a Christian movie company? Thank God, no! It's a company owned by Christians trying to make quality family movies.

RE "Hell", who goes there, and for how long- there are a lot of other Christian views besides "Eternal Torment for anyone who dies without specifically becoming a Christian."
God is both fair and kind, and everyone will get a fair and kind judgement, and it will be both wonderful and dreadful.
And in the end, all will see Jesus is the "Savior of all, but especially of those who trust Him".

So much good going for this movie, but one big glaring flaw spoils it. Why the universalism? The scene in the church is ruined by the catching of a magical light in a purse. What is the meaning of that? That "playing pretend" exends to church as well as the woods? The discussion about hell was harsh and lacked comprehension, sympathy or nuance. And the father's comments put the icing on the cake-- God would not be so cruel to send such a nice girl to hell.

What is up with that? Is Walden a media company with a Christian viewpoint or not? If not, be honest about it and don't hold yourself out to be making meaningful movies then. I came away disappointed and a little angry that Walden had wasted my time. I don't expect the gospel to be given every time in every movie, but this movie lent itself to a discussion of eternal matters. It was a missed opportunity.
