the reviewist did a fantastic job of picking out everything wrong with 300, much like our modern Christians that tend to only see whats wrong about any given thing. i personally not only enjoyed 300 but i also feel absolutely no remorse for enjoying it. God knows my heart. In fact he has used 300 in my heart for good, can you imagine that? something so vile, a "grotesque spectacle" used by the Almighty? the spartans were pagans, heathens, and almost definitely some of the worst humans ever to grace our planet. they were also possibly the best soldiers to do the same. what if we as Christian soldiers, lived and fought like the spartans? and i thought the director didnt do too bad. i like new ideas in movies. movies are kind of like life. they get boring if they never change. God is the only constant.

There are no good sides to this movie. The film begins with the Spartans practice of discarding imperfect children and ends with a battle between two historical empires, both pagan and barbaric, and yet seems to cast one as heroic, and the other as tyrannical. The only thing this film serves to do is to show us a picture of the moral ambiguity through which most of us view the world. At its' most basic level it is a very sensationalized and romanticized look at two cultures that should be regarded with a highly critical eye, at its' worst it glorifies violence and is explicitly anti-God in its view of morality and immortality. I see this as more of a genocidal, atheistic, and humanistic call-to-arms than anything else, although the director would suggest it is simply an entertainingly artistic expression of a comic-book saga. If you enjoy watching films like this then you might want to check yourself before God. A society that enjoys watching something like this is truly depraved..

Mustafayusuf, thank you for pointing out that fact. Jesus Christ is the man we are supposed to be changing ourselves to be like. Well, that He is constantly conforming us to His likeness. However, He is not the only one we are to learn from, is He? Is not every good and perfect gift from above? In your example I say we could learn from Satan. More about what is evil than good, though.

And I learn much wisdom and guidance from my father, even though he doesn't profess to be a Christian. Just because he doesn't want to be like Christ doesn't mean I should write everything he has to say off as evil. And that is an extreme of what you are trying to protray to me. This movie does glorify some evils, but we as Christians should be more concerned with Glorifying God, and trying to find the intricacies of life which will do that. If I relate this movie to my friends in a God honoring way rather than in a way which condemns sin, I bring more glory to my Father.

I really disagree with this article and some of the other comments. It is true that they may have taken some things like violence and nudity to the extreme. But was the passion of the christ not violent? Each film was violent because it needed to be. In order to show the intensity and loss of lives that actually happened. It may seem cruel the way that the kids grew up in Sparta but that's what really happened. Just because you didnt agree with the movies morals doesnt mean it wasnt a visually stunning film. The author of the article says that it didnt remind him of a traditional film. Well that's the point. Films are supposed to be changing and evolving. That's what helps make this such a revolutionary movie.

I saw the 300 with my parents and we all loved it. First, yes the movie could have been made without the sex scene. We know that they are married and that they are going to have sex, you could step outside the theater. They were historically very violent and would cast their children out and would encourage them to survive whatever the costs. This one of the key aspects that made them a such effective military force. I didn't think they were casting there violence in a positive light, only that at some points it is up to free men to preserve the freedom and there is a cost associated with freedom and in this case it was death. I also noticed during the movie that whenever there was cases of debauchery or when Gods name was been blasphemed that it was in a scene that was portrayed as utter evil (evil men with girl at oracle, debauchery in Xerxes tent, Persians calling Xerxes king of kings). The Spartans denied this tyrant because they were free men and could chose to not be ruled.

I am glad i read this article. Just looking at the posters and trailer its obvious that 300 glorifies violence. It is to be expected from the same source of "Sin City" which was an evil film that glorified murder.

The main reason for this comment was a response to the previous. Christian men are to learn from Christ and no-one else.
Gideon0231 You can look for the good in everything but not to learn from. Following your lines of logic (as an extreme exaple) you could say that Christians could learn from satan because he is persistent in his rebellion againsts God and we need to be persistent in our faith. However true the virtue identified is (in this example, persistence) it not justify or attribute anything worth emulating to its source (in this example satan). Your optimism is commendable but misplaced, look to Christ and learn from Him. With tender admonition i implore you to read the Bible, God's Word and study it, and mine the riches of Truth that lay there in. 2Timothy 3

I very strongly disagree with the quite negative review that this movie received. Spartans are a violent and short people. The movie depicted this aspect of Sparta VERY well. Also, the Spartans are highly intelligent and witty. This is also recorded in the movie.
I think the only two historical faults of this movie are the use of gold by a Spartan and that there were only a few hundred soldiers at Thermopylae, whereas historically about 3,700 other Greeks helped the Spartans.

This movie was a wonderful dipiction of brotherhood and of manhood. An overlying theme of the movie was that each Spartan took care of "the one on his left." This is an excellent view of what spiritual warfare is really about! And the king, Leonidas, obeyed the law, but also sacrificed his life and the lives of those in his guard for all of Sparta, just to prove he didn't compromise who he was. Christian men today can take a lesson from this ancient Greek.
