The review above is very relaxed about the quality of the movie. The star-laden cast adds no value to this crude, rude, obscene, foul and boring film. The vulgar images and language, the gross and insensitive depiction of human suffering is so repulsive that it is hard to watch. The self-consumed alleged Hollywood-directed irony is hard to understand for a regular "layman" movie-goer who would just like to enjoy a good film. This movie is a tasteless and sick effort to establish the f-word as the standard of communication through its excessive use. "Tropic Thunder" will make you feel debased and emotionally empty. It riducules anything and everything just for the sake of mockery. Ben Stiller proves himself yet again to be on a teenage maturity level as far as humor is concerned. If you have watched this movie you will have spent in vain two hours of your life. Regardless if you are a Christian or not.

I just saw the movie and was curious what the crosswalk review would say. I was a bit surprised by the Lightheartedness of it. Mr. Hawker did seem to overlook the vulgarity and irreverence of the whole thing. the opening fake ad for a drink "booty sweat' was more than just a "shock to the system". It was downright pornographic! I had to turn my head. And that was just the beginning of the movie. Yes , it was funny in some spots and I laughed out loud. But there were other scenes that were just too offensive . I agree with some of the other comments about how we as spirit filled christians should be convicted by such language, etc. Mr. Hawker said "some will laugh with guilt , and others will find the movie needlessly offensive".
I think that just speaks to where we are in our level of worldliness.
To me the bottom line is: Is it worth it to feed that garbage (language, violence, sexual refrences) to my soul for the sake of entertainment?

If you consider yourself a Christian, PLEASE DON"T SEE THIS MOVIE. The review by Mr. Hamaker comes NOWHERE CLOSE to describing the vulgarity and profanity that it is made of.

Sure, there are "over-the-top movie cliches", "loud and obnoxious" advertisements, and it may not specifically "make fun of Christians". But the vulgarity and profanity are pervasive. Almost every other word is F***, SH** or some other variety of profanity.

Mr. Hamaker doesn't give full due to the opening music-video style product endorsement - which is for a drink called "Booty Sweat" and depicts a woman's genitals and butocks dripping and sweating. The "offer for oral" sex is also shocking - consisting of at least a 90 second vivid description of what Jack Black's character will do with another actor's genitals in his mouth (down to swallowing ejaculate).

Every Christian should avoid this film, and Mr. Hamaker should submit an edited review fully describing the film's horribly vulgar nature.

I have not seen this film however I have seen the trailer and am astounded by this review based on the cautions alone. Reviewer's quote "Will Christians enjoy it? The movie is full of foul language and uses the Lord’s name irreverently. But its target is not God or Christians”. So does that justify a review that as a Christian he found the film “the year’s best comedy”? Excuse me …. I thought that the term Christian means Christ like. So is this reviewer suggesting that Jesus (or a person who is committed to live as Jesus lived) would be okay with a movie that uses his Father’s name as a swear word? God took that idea as such a serious offence against Himself that He included it in the 10 commandments. The comment that the target is not God or Christians is such an outrageous lie that I cannot fathom a Christian website supporting such a comment. Talk about deceived – ouch. How could anyone who has any love for God at all say such a thing? Please, have someone (who believes in the gospel) sit down with Christian Hamaker and explain spiritual warfare to him and how satan just loves people trivializing the name of God and turning His name into a common household curse word. The target is not God??? Right. Christians are not the target? Right. A note to Christians who have sat through the film – excuse the sarcasm – or not. At what point did God’s Holy Spirit, who lives inside you, say “its okay, I am not hurt or offended by what this film is saying about me. Just sit back and laugh along with it and please don’t embarrass Me by taking a stand and walking out of the movie. Someone might see you and ask you why.”

What does Crosswalk hope to find in wordly movies? Is being separate from the world too costly to undertake? Is it too dificult for Christians to simply renounce Hollywood?

The last commentator to this article thinks that stating he is a believer adds weight to his watching this movie, as if God is giving a stamp of approval through his actions. Don't kid yourself- God is not impressed by empty profession or a nasty attitude toward piety. You never read: without holiness no man shall see the Lord? When God separates the wheat from the chaff your bad theology will be proven.

Most of the Christians I know will not watch R-rated films. It is one thing to watch a film like Braveheart that is rated R because of the violence. It is quite another to watch an R-rated comedy. I think Crosswalk's editors have lost their minds. The Dark Knight review recently was bad enough, where the reviewer closed one eye to the darkness and excesses, not to mention the many flaws in the film. But this review is too much. What ever happened to the things that are true, the things that are honest, the things that are just, the things that are pure, the things that are lovely, the things that are of good report that we are told to think in Phillippians 4:8? Please explain to me how you're going to think those things while watching an R-rated comedy. I no longer consider Crosswalk to be a Christian web site. They need to change their slogan to "The Intersection of the World (meaning paganism) and Christianity."

Disciplefan,

There was something in the movie to focus on besides crude humor and foul language? What, like explosions? You've got to be kidding.

I am 20 and have been a Christian for 2 years now. I went with my brother and two cousins to watch it. We enjoyed it. I noticed all the comments from other users about this movie about how bad it is and all the language it has. My response to all of those users is..... WHY DID YOU GO SEE IT IF YOU KNEW WHAT TO EXPECT?! If all you focus on is the crude humor and the bad language it contains it makes sense you didnt enjoy it! Lighten up and look at the movie as a whole. Yes, I know that the bible speaks against it, but all of you went to go see it even when the trailers gave all of you a good idea what it would have. Here is my suggestion, STAY AWAY FROM ALL THE GOOD MOVIES THAT COME OUT IN ANY FORMAT!

I have a very passionate concern for the church that way too many professing Christians do not have any discernment or awareness of the tremendous spiritual warfare going on for the influence of their minds. Movies are one of biggest ways Satan tries to get us to give up and just be part of the world and tolerate entertainment with ant-biblical morals and standards.

That crosswalk could say this is the funniest movie of the summer blows my mind. Whatever happened to Galatians 5, walking by the Spirit and the works of the flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit, Philippians 4:8, what to allow in our minds, and Romans 16:19, to be simple or innocent concerning evil. This movie is all flesh and no spirit. That so called Christians are ok with this stuff confuses me. I can understand the battle that we fight inside trying to deny our flesh and wanting to see a movie like this. But the problem is, I don't even see the battle, just surrender to the world and acceptance of its ungodly character.

Wow...Dtrees1 hit is right on the nose! I cannot believe Crosswalk could remotely recommend this movie. I echo Detrees1 comments exactly. Yes Downy Jr provided some moments and Tom Cruises dance routine was hilarious but these moments were far, far overshadowed by the crude, vile and graphic moments of the film. Jack Black's drug addict routine and the scene where he talks about oral sex was so over the top. That scene alone should have put this movie on Crosswalks must avoid list.

Next time I'll pay much closer attention to the 'cautions' as the reviewer did pretty much cover the negatives in the "cautions" list but I really couldn't appreciate them until after the fact. My choice to see this movie was not a good one and I do own up to that. This reviewer however, needs his critic card suspended pending a review of the reviewer. Or better yet, check in with pluggedinonline.com and review their review. They have a nice long list of informative adjectives for this movie. Take note.

It is very disturbing to me that Crosswalk would even be remotely involved in recommending this movie. I was raised in a very liberal household and became a Christian later in life. Suffice to say, I am not easily "offended". Admittedly, I knew this movie wouldn't be "clean" by any means, but I was convinced that it would the "funniest-of-the year" and I could overlook the rest. I was wrong. It was impossible to overlook the rest. The movie opens with a spoof rap video that is worse than the real thing. One scene involves Jack Black (a heroin addict) graphically describing his fellatio method to anyone who would release him from being tied to a tree in a desperate detox attempt. Robert Downey's character is the only reason to see this movie, but it is not good enough to actually see the movie. It is so overwhelmingly crude and profane that it cannot be excused as satire, even though it is. It is meant to make money. I'm sorry I paid money to see it.
