Mike Huckabee’s unexpectedly strong second place showing in the Iowa Straw Poll brought new momentum to his Presidential campaign and for two reasons, Republicans should look seriously at his candidacy. First, he could unite conservatives—with a solid, consistent record on social issues that puts the other front-runners to shame, he’s easily the least-hated of the major contenders.
Second, he brings a populist touch to the nomination fight that’s much needed: as the son of a small-town fireman, the former Arkansas governor could destroy the image of the GOP as the “party of the rich.” His successful struggle at losing more than 100 pounds enhances his credentials as a “regular guy.” No one could call Mike Huckabee a country club Republican.
Whether he can raise big money or build a national organization remains to be seen, but his lucid, warm, persuasive and often humorous speaking style already gives him a big advantage over fellow conservative Fred Thompson.
