When we rented this movie, I had to get up and stop watching it. I almost felt sick to the point of throwing up. I don't understand how we can justify something like this story that might have good points to it but rots your soul in the process. Ephesians 5:3 NIV tells us that we are not to have even a hint of sexual immorality or impurity in our lives. The understanding we get from the Greek is like one spray of perfume in a football stadium. This movie had way more then one spray, it had the whole bottle.

I got this movie on DVD because of the rave review on crosswalk. I also am ashamed that a Christian movie critic would call this a worthy movie to see. Here is one of the quotes in this movie "It looks like you need a stiff one" that is one of many sexual comments in this movie. I was very glad that my husband and 17 year old son walked out of the room and didn't want to see this. I won't listen to this reviewer again.

I am amazed a Christian, gave the stamp of approval on this movie. First, here is a small background of John Waters: "Waters' movies present filthily lovable characters, 3 of his films, labeled the Trash Trilogy, pushed hard at boundaries of propriety and movie censorship. In a segment of Pink Flamingos,a small dog defecating and Divine eating the feces.A gay American, Waters is an avid supporter of gay rights and gay pride. He played a reverend in Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, Waters owns one of John Wayne Gacy's paintings, which hangs in his guest bedroom." Wikipedia.com Second, the transexual/homosexual lifestyle portrayed through the mom.The fact that you mentioned foul language as light and other sexual scenes in such matter of fact way, disappoints me terribly. The critic should read the article about "When did not so bad, become good." I am very concerned and feel the critic is deceived and leading others to be deceived by satans schemes, which are not even subtle in this movie.

I'm sorry you feel so threatened by "Hairspray." If you see darkness and deception in it, then by all means, sound the alarm. I, however, found two big themes in the movie, both of which are biblical:

1. Don't judge others based on the color of their skin.

2. Don't judge others based on their weight, or other superficial characteristics.

The movie is, for the most part, delightful. To tell people to avoid it strikes me as woefully misguided.

Please fellow Christians, Matthew is right -- you must understand the type of guy John Waters is. Just type in a search of him, go to the internet movie data base and just read some of his quotes. If you STILL wish to see a movie by him, then I just pray for you. And I'm ashamed at Crosswalk for touting this movie as good.

To Candigramz:
I have a homosexual sister -- I also had taken up theatre the importance of movies whilst in college. I KNOW what I'm talking about. It's SO EASY to get sucked in by the enemy -- he's just as smooth as he was with Eve in the garden. But we Christians are being too stupid to realize the underlaying themes of anything coming from Hollywood. And that is truly sad. There's no way in a million years I'll be able to explain it to you, why this movie is NOT one to go see. I saw the original, and I got the point right away. Why see a remake of basically the same thing? What you need to do is ask the One whose opinion you should be worried about -- God's opinion -- and ask HIM why you shouldn't watch it. We have to guard our hearts and minds from the enemy's attacks, and instead, we willingly fly to the spider's web. I will say it again -- READ THE BIBLE and then see why watching this is WRONG!!! Ask God to teach you in all things, and lean not on your understanding.

I repent and ask for your forgiveness, and you can read my edited review below. You will just have to do your own research to see if what I am saying is true...

Quote By John Waters:

"My goal is to smash every middle-class value that good citizens hold dear"

Hi, I used to love the works of John Waters, that is, before Jesus saved me and changed my heart. Hairspray is mild compared to some earlier films he wrote and/or directed, but hey, if the cross-dressing Mrs Turnblad doesn't bother you, you might want to rent and enjoy some of his other films.

Most memorable of these is a scene in one film, in which Divine, (the original Edna Turnblad)... Do your own research. Besides, I haven't enough space here to describe just how sick this individual is...

Tragically, Divine died of aids, and I know it is not pleasant to think about, but your kids might meet the same fate if you let hollywood teach them that a man dressing as a woman is funny, normal, and entertaining.

Today, in his 60s, Waters refers to himself as a filth elder. Should he be elder in your church? Would you like him influence your kids? Would you let him babysit? What is the conclusion? Hairspray, stay away.

I wonder if Write-on66 has even seen the movie. I just saw it and I'm confused by the comment that it promoted gay rights. Yes, there is a man playing the part of a woman, (which is, by the way, very different from the lifestyle of crossdressing.) This is an acting technique that has gone on for centuries, and frankly, it's pretty funny when it's done well. John Travolta did it well, and he's not a homosexual. While others who played the part of Edna Turnblatt on Broadway may have been homosexuals, it doesn't appear to be a prerequisite for getting the part because not all of the actors were. I enjoyed this movie thoroughly, and while I admit there are many Hollywood creations that promote the gay agenda, this movie is not one of them.

I'm sorry, but I just HAVE to speak up. Don't you see wat Hollywood and the gay agenda is doing? They are equating gay rights with the fight for black rights. THAT is why they ALWAYS have a guy (most of the time a gay man) playing the part of the mother in this movie. Gay rights and equal rights for the races is NOT the same, people! And those of us who are in objection to this are supposed to "lighten up?" We are supposed to accept, as Christians, being portrayed in movies as "closed-minded fuddy-duddies?" I don't THINK SO. We as Christians are to live in this world, but not be of this world. We are to be the salt and the light, showing that we can live a life devoted to Christ, yet trying to draw in those who need Jesus. Hailing this movie as a masterpiece when it goes so utterly against the WORD of GOD -- start reading it, by the way, to all of you who call us "fuddy-duddies" -- is completely reprehensable. Judgement starts in the house of God -- how will we all fair?

I am also responding to some of the other comments posted. I just saw Hairspray for the first time yesterday, and thought it was delightfully fun & touching. I loved it! I didn't worry a bit that John Travolta or the film is promoting cross-dressing or homosexuality! It didn't even cross my mind! I believe that as Christians, we must be a little more "in touch" with the world if we truly want to have a chance to be salt & light. I can appreciate that we're not to become "of the world," while we're "in the world," but I don't believe watching this movie is a corruption of Christian morals. If this movie is beneath or threatening to you, I'd be curious to know what kind of impact you're making on the non-believers around you -- if there are any who want to be around you. I've been a much more approachable friend to not-yet believers since I've lightened up. When I'm real with them, they are open to hearing more about my faith; a few have even embraced it as their own! Laugh more!

I am responding to the people below: Lighten up people. There is no reason for this kind of mean-ness to be going on. And if you want to get really picky, Shakespeare's plays used to have men playing women's parts. I personally look forward to seeing the movie. Thanks for the review.
