What I am understanding from this article is that family members must be addressed in order to overcome generational sins. What if particular family members are dead? What if family members continue to deny the sin? What must the whistle blower do to break the curse on his/her own?

I think this is true in ways large and small (like this: http://dadtoday.blogspot.com/2009/04/i-learned-it-by-watching-you.html). Also why i found it so valuable in our pre-marital counseling, our pastor had my wife and I tell stories of our families as deep as memory took us - and created a massive genogram -- to uncover patterns (strengths and failings) and invited us to speak aloud what we aspired to keep and leave as we created our new family.
