As a thinking Christian, I believe it is important, even healthy, to look at ideas from other people, even those we disagree with. Your comment about Maher focusing on the extremes of behavior is what critics of religion typically do. They find the silliest, shallowest, most bizarre manifestations of religious behavior and belittle the behavior, not the belief.
