Learning True Comfort

June Titus
The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deuteronomy 33:27).

In my morning quiet time, I was reading a devotional written by a father. He had written about his one-year-old son’s morning. First, the baby had wanted up; next he didn’t want out of his bath. Then his diaper was messy, and he cried until he was changed. When fed, he fussed over his food. Put on the floor to play, he fussed some more. He was all smiles as they carried him back to bed with his bottle. But in a few minutes he was crying again. What did he want?

As I read, it seemed to me that all the baby wanted was to be held and given attention. Only then would he be happy.

I sympathized. There are times when nothing satisfies me. I need to be held in love and given attention. At such times, my only comfort comes from drawing near to God in the only way I can. I pray and read His Word. I rest in His promises. I know God is listening to my prayers. “Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice” (Ps. 55:17).

I do not understand how God is everywhere, hears every prayer, loves each one of us individually, and knows everything about us. I only know He says He does, and I believe and am comforted.

I can’t stay all day letting Him hold me (although He’s always near). He lifts me gently to my feet and sends me to comfort and serve others, in His love.

What has happened to change my unhappy outlook?

I’ve rested awhile, figuratively, in God’s arms, and I’ve found strength and help for the day. All I needed was some comforting.

God of all comfort, I thank You that You know my needs. Let me remember that I am comforted so I can comfort others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
