Today's Scripture
And Abraham calleth the name of that place `Jehovah-Jireh,' because it is said this day in the mount, `Jehovah doth provide.' Genesis 22:14 Young’s Literal Translation

Thoughts for Today
This week we will be looking at five of the names applied to God in the Bible. Studying his names teaches us about his character. We can draw closer to him by applying these truths to our lives.

Today’s scripture is taken from the Genesis account of God telling Abraham to offer his precious son Isaac as a sacrifice. Totally trusting God and his love, Abraham set out to follow his instructions. At the very last moment, God provided a ram for the sacrifice and told Abraham not to harm Isaac. Abraham named the place Jehovah-Jireh, which means the Lord will provide.

God, our Father, cares and provides for his children. Some people have a distorted view of our heavenly Father because their earthly father did not provide for them. Although there are many reasons an earthly father may fail as a provider, God our Father never fails. He always provides for his children. He always meets his children’s needs at the right time and the right place.

The Bible says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 NIV). He will be there when we need him. Now, this does not mean that we are to give God our shopping list of everything we want and expect him to supply. It does mean that as we choose to put him at the center of our lives, he will always provide what we need—spiritually, emotionally, relationally, physically and financially. He understands our needs better than we do, and he truly cares. God will always provide his presence, love and consistency. He will never abandon us.

Consider this…
Do you have a need in your life right now? Your heavenly Father wants to meet that need. Trust him to do it in his way and his time … always the best way and the best time. He is Jehovah-jireh. He is your provider.

Prayer
Father, thank you for this reminder that you are my provider. You have always provided what I needed … and you always know better than I what my real needs are. Help me to trust you more in every situation. In Jesus’ name …

These thoughts were drawn from…
Knowing God My Father: Applying the names of God to my personal life by Jimmy Ray Lee, D.Min. This curriculum is designed to help people strengthen their relationship with their heavenly Father by applying his names to their personal life. Along with helping Christians know God better, it can serve as an evangelistic tool by giving a true picture of God to people who may have a distorted view of him because of an absent or abusive earthly father who did not or does not provide for them.
