Personal Palm Pilot
This devotional was written by Kelly McFadden

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”  Deuteronomy 6:5-8

I started a bad habit in junior high of writing notes to myself on my hand.  If I needed to remember to bring an assignment home or to call someone later, it would get written across my personal “palm pilot.”  Of course, every now and then I would wake up with the message across my cheek from sleeping on my hand.

Everyone has different methods to remind them of important things. Perhaps you use alarms in phones, Outlook calendar alerts, assistants or sticky notes all over the house. When it is important to remember something, it gets written or typed is a place where you are sure not to forget.

The Bible tells us that the most important things we can write on our hands, hearts and memories are the commandments the Lord gives us.  We are to impress them on our hearts, teach them to our children, talk about them, think about them in the morning and the evening, and live our days in reflection of what the Lord wants for us.  This is a way we love the Lord with all our heart, soul and strength.  It is about offering all we are to following His will for us.  It is about making a conscious decision each and every day to follow His commands.

Perhaps in that place where you are to see it, you should write this verse as a reminder to yourself to live each day, each moment, in consideration of what the Lord commands each of us.  For this verse shows us that we are to be mindful of the Lord in the ordinary and everyday…even when we sit at home.

And what does He command?  It is to love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

GOING DEEPER:

1. We are to live wholeheartedly for the Lord.  What can you do to make sure you are living a life that loves Him with all your heart, soul and strength?

2. If you have children, how can you make sure you are sharing the Lord’s commandments with them?  (If you do not have children, with whom are you talking about these commandments?)
