John P. Kee doesn't get nearly the same attention and celebrity treatment that peers like Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond or Byron Cage get. That's perhaps a conscious decision on Kee's part, since he intentionally chooses to not record under his own namesake, but rather rely on his New Life Community Choir to do the talking. A smart move given that Kee is rarely the center of attention in anything he does, allowing his music and assembly of choristers to take center stage instead.
This couldn't be more evident than in Nothing But Worship, the follow-up to 2005's The Reunion, a nostalgic trip down memory lane that revisited some of Kee's most beloved hits and collaborations over the years. But Nothing But Worship is a whole 'nother monster, as Kee reaches deeper into his choral roots, his musical training, and his heart for the church. From top to bottom, the album is a can't-sit-still gospel feast, brimming with deft musicianship, passionate praise, and untold amounts of groove.
Even after more than a quarter century in music ministry, Kee still has got it in him to make the saints dance in the pews, particularly with the rousing first single "Right Now Praise" and "I Know It," two urban-laced cuts that are vintage Kee. Even more infectious is the oh-so-funky "Sanctuary," a track so rhythmic you won't believe you're actually having church. Kee rounds out the praise party with the gospel-rock of "Live for You," the jazzy "No Greater Love," and the joyous "Come on Let's Worship."
It's an amped-up set on every level, with only occasional moments of introspection. In a duel of titans, Kee and Fred Hammond trade vocals in the impassioned "Oh Lord, Our God," a worshipful prayer backed by piano, strings, and a reverent vocal ensemble. Elsewhere, the smooth "Forgiven" and the traditional "It Shall Be" add just the right amount of balance to a disc that, for the most part, is front-loaded with gospel jams. But that's not at all a knock: Nothing But Worship is one of the most exhilarating gospel releases of 2007.
