In a nutshell: Side projects like Mike Herrera's Tumbledown are quite often labors of love that allow an artist to scratch a musical itch. And more often than not, they don't hold a candle to that artist's full time gig. Unfortunately, that is the case with Mike Herrera's country/rockabilly group Tumbledown. The erstwhile leader of MxPx exhibits a respectable appreciation of groups like Social Distortion and the sound of Nashville's Sun Studios. But his already reedy voice and his attempts to write classic songs of boozing and brawling fall completely flat, wasting the fine, jumped-up music his band kicks out.
