In a nutshell: Many worship albums these days are so layered and complicated that no Sunday morning church band is able to replicate the sound. John Mandeville's new album We Belong to Heaven is entirely accessible pop/rock worship, though dated. Some major life changes and a time of spiritual recovery sparked many of the lyrics, which are infectiously hopeful and full of insight. But the musical makeup is a 90s, CCM-type sound. I appreciate a good throwback album, but there have to be little twists of creative flare that give it a stamp of originality.
