Everyday Man

Reviewed by Andrea Bailey Willits
Style: Fresh hip-hop with Eminem's lyrical dexterity and dcTalk's melodies Top tracks: "Everyday Man," "Please"

In a nutshell: Bishop's third release boasts get-up-and-dance beats, instrumental flourishes, and select guest emcees, but the real star, as always, is Bishop. No trendy special effects or overdone samples here—Bishop's vocal consistency and tight storytelling achieve the smooth, cohesive feel of his most accomplished record to date. Spinning crowd-pleasing but deeply moving tales of breaking societal barriers ("Mud from My Eyes"), getting a fresh start in life ("Launch"), not trusting in man ("King"), surviving family drama and dysfunction ("Step 1, Step 2"), and owning up to your own insecurities ("Everyday Man"), the disc just gets better as you go. The second half sparkles with clean hooks and memorable choruses, the perfect medium for Bishop's message.
