Style: Gospel with sleek hip-hop stylings Top tracks: "I Gave It Up," "No More," "Rebuild"

In a nutshell: We never doubted the gospel star's talent, but on J. Moss' third solo release, the son of gospel legend Bill Moss, Sr., gets personal. For the first time, introspective lyrics hint at the singer's deepest struggles, emphasizing repentance and letting go on "I Gave It Up," and redemption from guilt and shame on "Restored." On the haunting "Rebuild," he confesses, "I've taken what you've made/and thrown its value away." And though transparent lyrics are a pleasant surprise, sonically it's the feisty fare that fans expect. Flexing his smooth, high tenor, Moss mixes traditional foot-stompers with straight-up hip-hop sounds, like on the catchy "No More." His unique falsetto, along with jazz and funk influences and stellar choir backing, combine to make heads nod and pews shake.
