God of the Ages

Reviewed by Andrew Greer
Style: Live praise & worship; compare to Travis Cottrell, Tommy Walker, and Scott Krippayne Top tracks: "God of the Ages," "The Lord's Prayer," "The Lord's Prayer (Reprise)"

In a nutshell: As worship—in musical terms—has become more of an adjective than a noun, recordings associated with the genre have become increasingly precise. Even supposed "live" projects incorporate considerable studio overdubs and technical tweaks. Fortunately for Billingsley, whose own "worship" definition was tested after being prescribed total voice rest last year to remedy a vocal cord issue, authentic worship shines through in a formidable concert/service that is undoubtedly "live." Featuring his still-soulful pipes, a tip-top backing band, and a roof-raising choir on a list of originals (from both Billingsley and worship favorite Tommy Walker) and familiar corporate cuts, God of the Ages is as close as you're gonna get to having Sunday church at home.
