FDA Set to Ban Caffeine in Alcoholic Drinks

Jim Liebelt

The controversial Four Loko drinks that contain caffeine and alcohol and that may have played a role in sending some college students to hospitals could soon be banned in the United States, based on an announcement from the office of Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

The Food and Drug Administration will rule that caffeine is an unsafe food additive to alcoholic beverages, and the move will effectively prohibit the sale of Four Loko, Joose and other similar drinks, according to Schumer's office. The Federal Trade Commission will join the campaign by notifying manufacturers of these drinks that they are engaged in potential illegal marketing, Schumer's office said.

Tuesday's announcement follows a growing nationwide campaign to crack down on the sale and use of caffeinated alcoholic beverages. Before New York's announced action over the weekend, four other states had banned the products.
