There’s Something About Mom

Many of us celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday. Social media platforms were filled with smiling pictures as some of us remembered our moms who have since passed away. Other snapshots were of today’s young moms, surrounded by babies and toddlers and all the hope and promise they bring. Mothers of grown children as well as grandmothers and birthmothers were also celebrated.

The folks at FoxNews.com gave me the privilege of sharing a piece I wrote reflecting on Mother’s Day on their site. I took the opportunity to honor my own mom, a woman who passed away when I was 9, but whose influence I carry forever in my heart.

When Yahya Abdi climbed into the wheel well of that Hawaii-bound Boeing 767, the 15-year-old California boy had one main objective: he wanted to make his way to Ethiopia and be reunited with his mother. His father had told him she was dead, but he had learned the truth. She was alive, and he was willing to risk his life in order to see her again.
