The Truth about the Truth - One Year Devotions for Women

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” - John 14:6

What did Jesus mean when he said that? Did he claim to have a corner on all truth? Was he suggesting that other religions are false?

The Bible tells us that God does not have truth, he is truth; he is equal to his attributes. This means we can have tremendous assurance that what he has told us stands. “God is not a man, that he should lie” (Numbers 23:19). Truth includes the idea of faithfulness. We can depend upon God’s being the truth, telling the truth, and explaining the truth to us.

Jesus Christ, God incarnate, is the true Truth about the truth! First of all, he is the Truth about God. “No one has ever seen God. But his only Son, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart; he has told us about him” (John 1:18). Second, he is the Truth about humanity. He told us that people are basically evil (Mark 7:21-22), and that we love darkness rather than light (John 3:19). Third, he is the Truth about salvation. There is a way sinful people can live with a holy God. It’s very simple, really. The holy God must forgive their sins.

Since Jesus claimed to be the true and holy God, we can believe him when he tells us that “everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). You can’t trust the word of many people anymore. But I have news for you—you can trust Jesus!
