Michael Moore, director of award-winning documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, criticized American Sniper in a tweet Sunday (Jan. 18).

American Sniper tells the story of Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who was credited with 160 kill shots during four tours in the Iraq War. Kyle was killed on Feb. 2, 2013 by a fellow veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Moore, who formerly served on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, criticized the film and denounced snipers as “cowards.”

“My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren't heroes. And invaders r worse,” Moore posted on his Twitter page.

Yahoo! TV reports American Sniper has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screening.
