Roma Downey Discusses Passion for Bringing Bible Stories to Life

Carrie Dedrick

Filmmaker Roma Downey’s passion is bringing biblical stories to life on the big and small screens. Working alongside her husband Mark Burnett, she produced the widely popular miniseries “The Bible” and the full-length film “Son of God.” Previously, Downey played the angel Monical on the TV series “Touched by an Angel.”

The Irish-born filmmaker told Irish Central that she feels called to spread the gospel through movies and television, especially considering the world events of today.

Downey compared the biblical disciples to modern persecuted Christians, saying, “You can’t help but see the parallels to these early believers and how brutally they were tortured. It’s inexcusable that it’s happening and that we’re not making more noise about it in this country.”

Downey’s upcoming projects includes a four hour miniseries based on the bestselling book “The Dovekeepers.”

She explained, “A group of Jews escape the fall of the temple in 70 A.D. and they take refuge in a hilltop retreat built by one of the Herods. Their hope is to be left in peace but the Romans pursue them.”

The series will air on March 31 and April 1.

The next major project for Downey will be the remake of biblical epic “Ben Hur,” which is to be released next February.
