Multiple Marriages
Sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; his second, Chileab, by Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah, the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; and the sixth, Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron. - 2 Samuel 3:2-5
David had a plurality of wives, and with those wives he had many children. It is important to recognize, this was never intended by God. If you go back to Genesis 2:18-25, God intended one male, one female; not two males and two females or one male with multiple females; one man and one woman were to come together as husband and wife until death parted them.
God intended a man and a woman to get married and stay together until they went to be with Him, and yet look at the church today. Look at all the divorces in the church today. We may not have men marrying multiple wives at one time, but we do have men and women marrying one spouse after another. They are unhappy, so they get a divorce and marry another person.
Just as God allowed David to marry many women, even though it was not His plan; He will allow Christians to marry and divorce. However, just as David experienced many consequences for having multiple wives, God’s people will suffer the consequences of having multiple marriages. God will not stop you, but it does not please Him.
Divorce is always a tragedy no matter how civilized the handling of it may be.
