God Does the Impossible

Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to David, saying, “Whose is the land?” saying also, “Make your covenant with me, and indeed my hand shall be with you to bring all Israel to you.” And David said, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. But one thing I require of you: you shall not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.” - 2 Samuel 3:12-13

Notice how easily and quickly Abner turned on Ishbosheth. Remember, it was Abner’s idea for him to take the throne after his father, Saul, and brothers were killed in battle. God had anointed David to be the king, but Abner had another plan and raised up Ishbosheth. He thought it was a great plan at the time, but then he turned on Ishbosheth and wanted to make a covenant with David.

This is just crazy. Think about it. Abner was not a man you wanted to make a covenant with. He was not a man of his word. He had no integrity or loyalty. Everything he did and said was motivated by his desire to have power.

However, look at the wisdom of David. I do not think David believed he could really trust Abner, but he saw the opportunity to unite Israel. He was at least willing to meet with Abner to see if he could bring the nation back together.

Like David, we really have to rely on God’s wisdom when we are in any situation. Sometimes, things look impossible or impractical, but for God, nothing is impossible and He often works in ways we cannot fully understand.

Wisdom is easy to him that will understand.
