Covenant Before the Lord
Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel. - 2 Samuel 5:3
Notice David’s actions when the elders of Israel came to make him king over all Israel. They had been at war with him. They had denied him their support after the death of Saul. They lifted up a man who had not been anointed by the Lord to be their king. With all that, David could have been angry; he could have wanted revenge, but instead we see the evidence of God’s hand upon his life.
When the elders came to David, he did not bring up the past; he did not ask for recompense; he simply made a covenant with them, but notice, David’s covenants were always made before the Lord. He was always putting God as a witness—a witness between him and the people, making the accountability to the Lord, not to man.
This is very important because they had finally anointed him to be king but God already had anointed him with the Holy Spirit. God had already raised him up as king. David had been faithful to the calling of the Lord. The people have not been faithful to God. With this covenant, they were not only promising David, they were making a commitment to the Lord. They were promising to follow the leadership of God.
David was accountable to the call of God, just as we are accountable to the call of God in each one of our lives. We are accountable to submit to the leadership God puts over us, so be sure to look for the anointing on the forehead, because then you will be submitting to the Lord.
The path of submission is the way to peace.
