Good Intentions Condemn

And David became angry because of the Lord’s outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day. - 2 Samuel 6:8

Notice what happened here. David became angry because of the calamity. David was wrong, but he did not understand God was trying to get his attention. David was in disobedience to the Lord and He wanted David to realize he was doing something wrong. David was the leader. He knew better. He knew he was not supposed to put the Ark of the Covenant on a cart. David caused Uzzah’s death.

David did not understand why God struck Uzzah dead. He thought he had a great idea to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Did God not understand what David was trying to do? It was a good thing, not something he should be punished for doing.

David was thinking exactly how we think. If we are trying to do something good, no one should look at how we are doing it. God needs to look at our good intentions. He should not punish us if we break a couple of rules for a good cause. Right?

That way of thinking is completely wrong. God cannot ignore sin, just because we have good intentions. He desires we do the right thing all the time. We never have to sin in order to do something good. We just have to seek wisdom from Him, to do it right. If you truly want God to bless you and to use your life; then do not play with sin. Sin disqualifies people; obedience to God brings blessings.

No sin against God is little, because it is sin against the great God of heaven and earth.
