Right Thing but Wrong Way

So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. - 2 Samuel 6:10

On the way to the city of Jerusalem, the oxen pulling the cart carrying the Ark of the Covenant stumbled and Uzzah reached out and touched the Ark. Because he touched something holy to the Lord, Uzzah was struck dead by God. He sinned against the Lord. After God struck down Uzzah, David feared the Lord, so he decided to leave the Ark where it was, at the house of Obed-Edom.

Now the name Obed-Edom means “servant of Edom;” he was a Gittite and a Levite, of the house of Kohath. This is important because the house of Kohath was the family of the Levites who were called to transport the Ark of the Covenant. God was putting the Ark into the hands of the right people, because David had used the wrong people with the wrong method of moving it.

There is an important lesson in this chapter and we keep seeing it again and again. David had the right idea, to bring the Ark of the Covenant into the city of Jerusalem, but he did not do it the right way. He had good intentions but his execution was not right with God.

If we allow God to guide and direct us, He will show us the right thing to do and the right way to do it. If we want God to use us to build His kingdom, it has to be done according to His plans and purposes, not according to our good intentions.

God made us for Himself; that is the first and last thing
that can be said about human existence and
whatever more we add is commentary.
