Pride Brings Destruction

Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death. - 2 Samuel 6:23

Michal thought she could unfairly condemn the king of Israel for acting improperly and get away with it, but she was in for a big surprise. She was a very prideful woman, because her father had been the first king of Israel. She thought she was better than David and she could put him in his place. However, God had already put him in his place and made him king instead of any of Saul’s sons.

David was not intimidated by Michal. He did not bow his head in shame because of her accusations. He knew who he was before the Lord; he knew his motives for dancing before the Lord. He would not allow Michal to dishonor him or dishonor the Lord.

Michal despised him in her heart and her actions and attitude towards David made him disdain her in his heart. He no longer went in to her. They would no longer have sexual relations, and he would not give her any children. She would be accursed among the people.

I do not think this was God’s way to punish Michal, but I think David did not want her anymore, because he saw the ugliness of her heart. This was the consequence of Michal’s attitude and actions. In her pride, she caused her own downfall.

Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction.” God calls us to be humble, and we will be blessed. Pride will only lead to destruction.

As the first step heaven-ward is humility,
the first step hell-ward is pride.
