Repentant Heart

“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.” - 2 Samuel 7:12

This was the promise from the Lord to David; God was going to build him a house. When David died, God would establish one of David’s descendants on the throne of Israel.

This was an important promise because the house of Saul had been cut off. While Saul had been the first king, no one from his family had been anointed king after him. David was anointed king after Saul, and God would continue to have someone from David’s house on the throne of Israel.

Notice, God would establish David’s kingdom. It was all up to Him who sat upon the throne. The house of Saul was gone, because God cut him off. Saul was constantly disobedient to the Lord until finally He was done. Saul was not willing to follow the Lord faithfully. Even though Samuel was constantly praying for him and giving him wisdom, Saul was controlled by his flesh and not the spirit.

On the other hand, David was obedient to the Lord. He messed up, but he always came back with a repentant heart. God saw his heart and knew he was a faithful servant to Him.

God does not expect us to be perfect. We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God. He wants faithful servants who will come before Him in repentance when we fail. He is always faithful to forgive a repentant sinner.

True repentance does not substitute sacrifice for obedience.
