Showing the Kindness of God
Then the king said, “Is there not still someone from the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?”And Ziba said to the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet.” - 2 Samuel 9:3
David wanted to show the kindness of God to anyone who was left alive from Saul’s house. Ziba, a servant from Saul’s house told the king concerning Mephibosheth. He was the crippled son of Jonathan; also called Meribbaal, meaning “a contender against Baal” (1 Chronicles 8:34; 9:40). He was only five when the news of Saul and Jonathan’s death came from Jezreel. On hearing the report his nurse took him up and fled. As she did, he fell and became crippled (2 Samuel 4:4).
Deep down in David’s heart was godly kindness, which would be extended now to Mephibosheth. As David is a type of Christ, we can easily relate this to Jesus who has chosen to extend his Kingly kindness to us. Titus 3:4-5 tells us: But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us ...
As followers of Christ, we should extend kindness to others. Ephesians 4:32 tells us: be kind one to another. There are many people that are crippled in the body of Christ; they need your help, love and kindness; they need whatever we can give them in the Lord. The fruit of the Spirit is kindness (Galatians 5:22). Look at the people around you, and then ask yourself this question: Who can I show the kindness of God to?
