Bad Counsel

… And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon.  And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not rather sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?” - 2 Samuel 10:2-3

Look at the bad counsel the new King of Ammon was given. Instead of wise advice leading the two nations to a continued peaceful alliance; their evil words created war. Their foolish counsel manipulated the king into questioning David’s pure heart and good intentions. They were ungrateful, when all David wanted to do was help. They hated him and came against him, the Lord’s anointed.

Be careful in taking advice from people who do not know the Lord. Often their counsel is ungodly and untrustworthy. It is possible that they could have the wrong motives when they give you counsel.  Do you question the good intentions of people who God has placed in your life? Those who have shown kindness and are only trying to help you?

Do you find yourselves being manipulated into making bad decisions? Psalm 1:1 gives us wise advice: Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

The best counsel is from God’s Word. Who do you find yourself going to for counsel?

Men give advice, God gives guidance.
